‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:40

Sleep Mats for the Homeless

We are truly blessed to have the opportunity to partner with the Christian Caring Center in Browns Mills in their outreach to the homeless in Burlington County.

Many hands and many hearts come together to create durable mats out of used plastic bags that are flattened, cut, joined and crocheted into a six-foot, waterproof cushion for people without homes who are often sleeping on the ground.

We meet at Faith Church each Saturday in January, February and March from 10:00am to noon. Everyone is welcome, and many volunteers are needed as it takes time (and 900 bags) to create each mat.

There are tasks for all ages and all skills, including sorting and flattening bags, cutting them into strips, looping the strips together to form balls of “plarn” (plastic yarn) and finally crocheting the mats. If you can flatten a bag, you can help! Contact the church at 609-654-5148 for more information.
